When standing alone, the Initials "Zh", "Ch", "Sh" and "R" also carry the vowel "i" with them.  However, the "i" sound is not pronounced.   These three initials carry a strong "r" sound with them, almost like the "r" sound in "rain."  Click on the initial to hear the pronunciation. 

 

Zhi                          "G" like in "Gym."  This initial sounds a lot like the "ger" in "Ginger."

 

Chi                       "Ch" like in "China"  Don't forget that "r" sound.

 

Shi                          "Sh" like in "Shirt"

 

Ri                                 "R" like in "Ready"  *To pronounce this sound correctly try saying the English "r" but
